Dentures and Partials

Dentures are replacements for your missing teeth that you can remove when you want to. Typically, dentures consist of a metal framework for sturdiness, surrounded by acrylic for comfortable fit.

There are two basic types of dentures. First, complete dentures replace all of your teeth. Partial dentures, or partials, are used to fill gaps when you have teeth missing. Partials help prevent your remaining teeth from shifting position.

You may find that, while you still have teeth remaining, you have too few healthy ones to support partial dentures. At this point, our South Charlotte dentists may recommend removing the few remaining teeth and going for a complete set of dentures. When this occurs, we must wait for your gums to heal before we proceed with fitting you for your permanent dentures.

The Denture Fitting Process

The process of fitting you for your permanent dentures can take several visits over the space of a few weeks. Here are some common steps in the process:

  • During your initial visit, your dentist will make an initial diagnosis, get to know you, your dental history, and what level of performance and wear you need from your dentures. We will make impressions of your jaw, take bite measurements, and make notes about the color and shade of your teeth or current dentures. All of these findings are sent to a dental lab to begin the process of making your custom dentures.
  • At the lab, technicians make a model of your jaw. Made of denture teeth mounted in wax, this model is often sent back to Carmel Professional Dentistry so we can test your dentures for proper color, shape, and fit, and then send back for adjustments.
  • With the measurements and adjustments made, your dentures are completed in the lab by replacing the wax with acrylic, and then heating the plastic to harden it.
  • Your new dentures are sent back to Carmel Professional Dentistry for final fitting and any further adjustments.

A final note: your fitting may be over and your dentures fit perfectly, but this is not the end of the story. Your gums will continue to age and change shape over the years. This is why we recommend that you come back every few years to have your dentures re-lined, re-fit, or even remade.
