Root Canals

In the past, injured or diseased teeth frequently had to be removed. Today, they often can be saved through endodontic treatment, commonly called a root canal. We know no one wants to undergo a root canal, but it is often necessary to save or strengthen a diseased tooth. At Carmel Professional Dentistry, we employ an endodontist – a dentist who specializes in root canal treatment – to make sure that the procedure is as simple and painless as possible. This dentist was selected for his excellent skills and calm, gentle manner.

A root canal is often necessary when bridgework to replace a missing tooth is needed. The teeth that will support the bridge need to be as strong and secure as possible to anchor it and provide the optimal results for chewing.

While not anticipated like a birthday or a night out, a root canal usually isn’t any more painful than most other dental procedures. In fact, recent advances in treatment and anesthetics have significantly lowered patient discomfort.

The Root Canal Procedure

The process of root canal therapy usually takes place in one appointment. Generally, it proceeds like this:

Step 1: The inner part of the tooth, called the pulp, has been affected due to a large cavity in this example. The infection has extended beyond the root and created bone destruction at the apex (tip of the root).

Step 2: The top part of the tooth is prepared with a high-speed drill to remove decayed areas as well as shaping the access.

Step 3: Small files are used to remove the decayed areas and any remaining pulp. This can be done using a specialized drill.

Although a root canal can typically be performed in one visit, the fact is that some teeth that require a root canal also have large portions of decay. This unhealthy tooth is brittle and is not sturdy. For this reason, we may recommend that a tooth that has had root canal treatment should be restored with a dental crown. A separate appointment will be necessary for the crown.
